4. HDR STUDENT EXPERIENCE SURVEY

Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations HDR experience survey 2011 http://survey.opinio.net/s?s=5764

The 2011 CAPA HDR Experience Survey has been designed to assist CAPA and the Australian Government in informing the review of the Research Training Scheme and standards for the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA). This survey is vitally important to ensure that all students have the best experiences whilst undergoing their research candidature.

The survey has several elements to it. It looks into experiences with Supervisors, resources on your campus, the amount of money you put in on top of what the University provides, academic independence and collegiality. The first questions are general demographics, so that our submission may also comment on the range of ways and places people study, particularly comparing rural and regional students to domestic students, and students in different faculties or Fields of Research.

There are five prizes up for grabs for each of our regions (QLD and NT, NSW and ACT, VIC and Tas, SA, and WA) of a $50 Co-op Bookshop voucher, and a major national prize of an Amazon Kindle with built-in WiFi, a stylish case in "CAPA Blue", and $30 to spend at the Amazon Store. To enter the draw, please enter your email address at the place noted on the final screen.

This study has been made possible by a grant from the Australian Government Department of Innovation, Industry, Science, and Research. CAPA thanks DIISR for recognising the important of the student voice when planning for the future.

All responses are entirely confidential and shall not be provided to Universities or the Government attached to any information which may be used to identify you.

We welcome any questions or queries that you might have regarding this survey. Please feel free to contact National President, John Nowakowski, on president@capa.edu.au at any time.

3. MATLAB – CALL FOR INTERESTED STUDENTS
NUPSA is considering hosting a MATLAB workshop for post-graduate students. In order to assess the demand for such a workshop, we ask any students interested in attending a MATLAB session to e-mail NUPSA - nupsa@newcastle.edu.au and inform us of the level of tuition desired, i.e. basic, intermediate or advanced. We will probably only host one workshop with limited numbers available and want to optimise it for as many students as possible. For more information please contact nupsa@newcastle.edu.au

4. SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT SURVEY
NUPSA was recently represented at the University’s Sustainable Transport Workshop. The University is planning to spend a large sum of money on installing new parking spaces, which will be heavily subsidised by the University. These subsidies are covered by all students via their fees, regardless of whether they use a car to travel to and from university or not, resulting in an inequitable and unsustainable advantage to car drivers. As an upshot of this, NUPSA is interested in getting feedback on the modes of transport used by postgraduate students to and from university, as well as around university. Please take the time to fill in the following survey and give us your comments/thoughts on how to make transport to and from uni fair and sustainable for all: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/83K6ZM5

5. ANXIETY STUDY
My name is Nick. I am a Psychology PhD student investigating how people become anxious, with the aim of assisting people to overcome their fears.

I am asking Asian people to help me to investigate anxiety by setting aside 1.5 hours of their time. I would be asking you to complete an online questionnaire at a time and place that suits you (you just need internet access) that goes for around 15 minutes, and then attend a lab session (about 1 hour 15 minutes) at the Callaghan campus in the W (behavioural sciences) building, room W 132, or Ourimbah campus in the SO (Science Office) building, room E 1.26.

At the end of your participation, participants will be reimbursed $20 for their time and travel. Due to the nature of the study investigating anxiety, we necessarily induce anxiety in our participants, and as such, each participant will receive 5-10 electric stimulations. However, you are free to choose this level, and the sensation that you will feel is very similar to static electricity, like when you touch a shopping trolley or a car door.

If you are interested in participating, or if you would like more information, please email learningstudy@hotmail.com or c3073670@uon.edu.au

Thank you for your interest.

6. NECK PAIN STUDY
Do you have neck pain? Seeking volunteers for a physiotherapy study

We are seeking individuals with neck pain lasting longer than three months to participate in a research study, which will involve clinical measurements of the neck and the application of a standardised physiotherapy intervention. You must be between 18-55 years old and not have any conditions that would normally prohibit physiotherapy treatment of the neck.

This University of Newcastle based project will require you to attend the School of Health Sciences Laboratory in the Hunter Building at Callaghan on two occasions, and have a single treatment technique applied to your neck by a physiotherapist.

For more information about the study please contact Dr Suzanne Snodgrass on 0249212089 or Suzanne.Snodgrass@newcastle.edu.au.

This project has been approved by the University of Newcastle Human Research Ethics Committee, Approval No H-2011-0044.

7. YOGA GROUP

3. SSTAR AUTUMN CONFERENCE 2011
Semiotics: Learning theory, research methodology, or educational philosophy?

Keynote Speaker: Dr Inna Semetsky
Date: Friday 13 May 2011
Time: 9.30 – 3.30pm
Location: Bimet Lodge 121 Union Street, The Junction

Semiotics “lives” in Academia mainly in the departments of media and communication or in linguistics, and the value of this interdisciplinary field remains underrated in the schools of education. In this talk I will reflect on the recent comprehensive volume titled SEMIOTICS EDUCATION EXPERIENCE as representative of the cutting-edge research in the field of education specifically. I will address a new sub-branch of semiotics, edusemiotics, as a theory-practice nexus oriented to the interpretation of signs (as a unit of semiotic analysis) with which, according to American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce, “the world is perfused”. Semiotics will be shown as an overarching conceptual framework especially fruitful for education because people are always already sign-using systems, even if they may not know it.

The conference is FREE.
Please register your interest via email: soe-research@newcastle.edu.au or Phone: 4921 5520

Gabrielle Briggs
Winner of the 2010 UoN competition and runner up in the National/Trans-Tasman final.
"This competition is a chance to impress. RHD students showcase their exciting research to not only this university, but to the whole nation. It encourages students to step outside of their research and focus on what is really important and interesting about the work that they do.
I was astonished at the response from the University and the local community after last year's competition. I have had multiple radio interviews with local and national broadcasters and spoken at forums and community groups. This kind of recognition is a huge motivator for RHD students who might otherwise be bogged down in the logistical elements of their research and thesis."

UoN Prizes
First Prize - $1500, plus return airfare and 1 nights’ accommodation for participation in the National/Trans-Tasman competition at the University of Western Australia on 29 September 2011.

The portal is designed to promote the re-use and sharing of research data to advance discoveries, connect researchers across disciplines and promote opportunities for collaboration.

A citable profile for your research data can contain rich descriptive metadata, including information about the purpose and scope of your research, spatial information, methodologies, analyses conducted, file formats or data structures, access conditions, embargo periods and contributing researchers, crediting the data creator/s appropriately.
A profile does not contain the research data, but will outline the terms for accessing the data determined by the chief investigator/researcher.

The Equity and Diversity Unit, the International Division and NUSA work together each year to host a range of events to celebrate Harmony during the month of March. A Taste of Harmony has been a regular feature of our celebrations in recent times.
The message for Harmony Day in 2011 is that Everyone Belongs. This means that all Australians are a welcome part of our country, regardless of their background. It's a time to reflect on where Australia has come from, recognising the traditional owners of this land. It's also about community participation, inclusiveness and respect – celebrating the different cultures that make Australia a great place to live.
2011 at the University of Newcastle will see a week of inclusive on-campus events designed to celebrate the rich diversity of our staff and students.
