NOTICE TO RESEARCH HIGHER DEGREE CANDIDATES

This advice is to inform you of the University’s requirements in relation to travel and insurance.

To be covered by University Insurance as a student, overseas travel needs to be a requirement of a course or program. There is a 90 day coverage period however if trips are to exceed this period, the Risk Management Unit needs to be contacted on a case-by-case basis to determine if coverage can be extended for any trips longer than 90 days. Also, please note, there is no coverage for any personal travel taken in addition to the University approval travel. Students will be required to purchase their own travel insurance for the personal portion of their trip.

There are various categories (eg, Staff, Student, Scholarship holder) and each provides a different level of cover. You should consult with the relevant contacts below to determine the most appropriate category of coverage for your situation.

Additionally, students will need to provide a copy of their itinerary (flights and accommodation details) and contact details to STA travel (Callaghan outlet) or Hunter Travel Group / Travelworld and request that it be loaded into the International SOS Traveller Locator System. This system is used by the University as a means of determining if any staff or students are on the ground in an area if an incident occurred. Students will need to have their itinerary to STA or Hunter Travel Group/Travelworld at least 5 business days prior to their departure.

STA e-mail newcastleedu@branch.statravel.com.au
Hunter Travel Group/Travelworld uon@htg.com.au

Prior to departing, we recommend University Travellers also log their trip details on www.smarttraveller.gov.au to provide an additional level of support in the unlikely event of an emergency.

EDITING OF RESEARCH THESES BY PROFESSIONAL EDITORS

The University of Newcastle has adopted the Policy developed by the Deans and Directors of Graduate Studies collaboratively with the Council of Australian Societies of Editors.
More details for the policy are provided on the University's Research Higher Degrees web site page.
Briefly the policy has been developed to give guidance to professional editors. The document has been developed with close attention to the current Australian Standards for Editing Practice (ASEP).
It is expected that students will seek guidance on editorial advice from their academic supervisors.
Students writing up a thesis should be aware of the requirements under this newly adopted Policy - so please check it out.
The Australian Standards for Editing Practice web address is provided, or click on the link

Promote Your Research via Research Data Australia

Do you have data that you have captured or generated as part of research conducted for your thesis? Have you recently completed a project requiring storage and preservation of research data? Would you like to promote your research to the global community? You may wish to consider creating a citable profile for your research data to be published in Research Data Australia.

Research Data Australia is a national web portal developed by the Australian National Data Service (ANDS) promoting Australian research contributed by Australian universities and research institutions focusing on researchers and research data.

The portal is designed to promote the re-use and sharing of research data to advance discoveries, connect researchers across disciplines and promote opportunities for collaboration.

Access Research Data Australia at
http://services.ands.org.au/home/orca/rda/index.php

The University of Newcastle is one of a number of Australian universities to receive funding to create a profile for the University in Research Data Australia promoting our research activity.

What is a research data profile?
A citable profile for your research data can contain rich descriptive metadata, including information about the purpose and scope of your research, spatial information, methodologies, analyses conducted, file formats or data structures, access conditions, embargo periods and contributing researchers, crediting the data creator/s appropriately.
A profile does not contain the research data, but will outline the terms for accessing the data determined by the chief investigator/researcher.
